I've ALWAYS been a devotee of Cthuloid kitsch ... as anyone who's been reading this blog for a while certainly knows. I've been even MORE deeply enmeshed in Lovecraftiana since Hyrum and I started pursuing a license with Chaosium ... and I've been practically SWIMMING in it since we signed the deal and work began on actual products for Super Genius Games.
I've got a Summer Fun Cthulhu plush next to my desk, Call of Cthulhu game supplements piled all around my chair, a half-finished mythos-themed holiday story on my hard drive, lots of Cthulhu doodles in my notebooks, an "I Love Cthulhu" t-shirt for sale on Cafe Press, and a long string of bookmarks to other related web sites. But the BEST thing I've come across in a long while is the short film Casting Call of Cthulhu.
Two words: Brill + Yent!

"So ... you're the 'new hotness'?"
"Maybe ... I still don't have a STORY or anything."
Sometimes my characters like to talk to one another. It's like my brain is some biological Green Room where they hang out while waiting to be called onto the set. Gerry Table is always there being a curmudgeon and expressing jealousy of anyone who's getting to make regular appearances. And he's going to be very jealous this week because it's time for another Bunny Week!
Truth be told, this may be the last one for a while. By the time the week is over I'll have gone through most of the existing doodles featuring these characters ... and any future ones can be presented here and there as regular daily doodles.

It's supposed to be a scorcher of a day here. The temperatures are supposed to be in the mid-90s (although Keri's sources seem to say it's going to be over 100 ... but they're on the inland side of Shadowridge, and it tends to be noticeably cooler here on the coastal side). It's already pretty warm and the sun is just starting to get to it's "beat down and cook your brains" phase.
The idea of going to see a movie (or anywhere with air conditioning) is pretty appealing ... but I'm trying to get work done on my impending deadlines. So I'm going to tough it out here at least another few hours. Maybe mid-afternoon or so I'll give myself and my computer a break and knock off until the sun starts to set.
In the meanwhile, it's re-writing manga translations for me!
Stay cool, everyone!

Yeah ... I have no idea what I was thinking about when I drew this doodle. But looking at it makes me think of various geeky debates I've been in or around ... where two people have knock-down, drag out arguments over the minutiae of comics, sports, movies, literature, TV shows, game rules, history and other desperately important trivialities.

I first "discovered" the music of George Gershwin sometime in high school, I think, when an art teacher was teaching a class about interpreting one sort of experience into a different medium (he was using An American In Paris as his example, but also played Rhapsody In Blue for us).
I was hooked.
At that same point in my life, I was ALSO hooked on the theater illustrations of Al Hirschfeld. I clipped the weekly Friday Leisure section one-column caricatures from the NY Times and anxiously awaited Sunday's paper to see if the Entertainment section would have a larger, more detailed drawing. (Thankfully, they often did.) Even when I went away to university, my father kept cutting out the Hirschfelds for me ... and pouring through those clippings was the first thing I did after greeting and chatting with the family.
Both artists have remained STRONG influences on me over the years. I can STILL see a lot of Hirschfeld's line work and shading techniques struggling to inform my cartoons and doodles ... and I still have a solid block of Gershwin in my MP3 library (though I don't click on it nearly as often as I used to).
That's why it came as something of a surprise to me last night, when I was visiting with Hyrum and Annie, that Disney's Fantasia 2000 featured a performance of Rhapsody In Blue interpreted with Hirschfeld-esque animation. (It MOSTLY came as a shock that I'd managed not to hear about such a thing for 8 years!) And, sitting down to watch it, I was completely blown away! It was truly an awesome thing to behold ... and now I find myself wanting very much to go out and buy a copy of the DVD so that I can watch it again (and again) whenever the mood strikes.
It also makes me want to draw ... while listening to Gershwin.
Maybe I'll find some time for that over the weekend.

Tycho : Several people (3) asked about this set's whereabouts, and I am happy to announce that it just hit the store. (CW)TB
Tycho : I guess Gabe wrote little intros for these pages. Hmm. Here's the second one: Page two of our four page prequel comic is now available over on the Greenhouse site. We actually have a very complete back story for this universe. Everything from how Gabe and Tycho met each other to the Brahe family's generation spanning fascination with the occult. The game has a ton of content in it if you end up liking the setting. -Gabe out He's not wrong, actually. I'm not scheduled to do it or anything, but I have two lectures I am hungry to write. ...
New Comic : The Fangspire, Part One
Tycho : We ended up taking a shine to that exterminator we made for some reason, but since we like to retain our conceptual agility we thought it was time to return to the news. With Gabriel leaving town, we saw an opportunity to indulge ourselves in questions like "what happened in there, exactly?" There are three such indulgences, so hopefully we weren't the only people curious about these events, which take place in the womb of the Ancient Earth. I've been inundated with news really from the moment my cohort left, most of which will have to be left to our ...

"Um ... yeah ... I found them."
This is another doodle from the ongoing "classic D&D" campaign. I've found that posting them ONLY on Tuesdays mean that I'm getting quite the backlog of game-inspired doodles ... and I keep making MORE. Add to that the fact that I'm just not doodling all that often on nights OTHER than game nights (that's probably the biggest LOSS for me in not having a "day job" where I have to attend meetings ... I mean other than the paycheck and benefits, of course), and you can see how I've come to the decision to start posting game-related doodles more frequently.
It's tough playing the massive, scary-looking living construct character ... Vinmar is almost always the most obvious target (and, when his Flurry Of Blows attacks land a few rounds in a row, can often seem like the most devastating member of our party, despite the fact that Karnak really does more damage over the course of any given fight). So it's surprising that he is often suffers the results of focused attacks by our opponents. However, being a monk, Vinmar's AC is still relatively low ... so he gets hit ... a lot.
Back in Seattle after almost two weeks in the Eastern Part of this country. Only three days were spent in Washington DC (of which I have a few more, last posts), while the bulk of it was with family in Pittsburgh (and included 3 birthdays plus Mother's Day). The collected family (both mine and the Lovely Bride's) is doing well, thank you.

i liked it
( maybe the large orange julius had some effect tho )
the editing needed some work to make things clearer...
especially with the car fu in the races,
cars used acrobatically as weapons...
tons of motion blur doesnt help, just saying.
I could do with less of the monkey...
especially over the credits.
But its good.
Its about family and talent versus greed.
Its visual adrenaline pumped directly at the eyes.
Everything felt like it was slowed down afterwards.
See it in IMAX if you can.
(only 10 other people were in the audience )
